Integrated Drilling Equipment Acquires S&P Drives Automation Controls, LLC

Integrated Drilling Equipment (IDE) Company, a vertically integrated drilling rig manufacturer certified by the American Petroleum Institute, has acquired S&P Drives Automation Controls (S&P DAC), LLC, CEO Steve Cope announced. S&P DAC will now be known as International Electric Company (IEC) Automation and Controls.

“The acquisition of S&P Drives Automation Controls’ advanced technology is a key part of our growth strategy, enabling IDE to position itself in the forefront of rig automation,” said Cope. “In four years, S&P Drives Automation Controls has developed a strong and reliable presence in the industry that we intend to strengthen and build on.”

Founded in 2008 by Charles Piper and Matt Shaw, S&P DAC designs and manufactures advanced drilling control and automation systems. Piper and Shaw’s 35 years of combined experience have allowed them to provide consultation and the development and support of custom, advanced control systems for drilling rigs where open source access was available.

Now as IEC Automation and Controls, the new division will operate with support from IEC Systems – a full-service electrical design, engineering, manufacturing, supply and installation division of IDE. IEC Systems services a global clientele specializing in the maintenance of electrical, lighting, power generation, fire and gas detection, communication, alarm, shutdown, and control systems.  

The acquisition of S&P DAC will play a critical role in the enhancement of IEC Systems’ Centurion, a drilling control system with a closed loop design that integrates fire, gas detection, communication, camera and other rig systems. Centurion’s open source architecture also allows third party services to easily connect and control the rig’s surface and downhole equipment, while maintaining supervisory control to ensure safe operating parameters to protect both personnel and machinery.
