For those communities that do purify their drinking water, chlorine gas is a common choice of disinfectant. However, it is a hazardous material that can injure and even kill those who handle it — a danger that extends to neighboring homes, schools, and businesses.

Many municipalities are changing to bulk sodium hypochlorite, a concentrated form of bleach, due to a perception of improved safety. However, this chemical can also form chlorine gas, is harder to maintain than a gas disinfection system, and is quite a bit more expensive to purchase.
