Borets Announces Addition Of Siemens' VFD System To Its Downhole PMM Product Line

Borets has announced the addition of the Siemens SINAMICS Perfect Harmony GH180 medium voltage VFD system (MV VFDS) into its family of low-voltage drive systems (LV VFDS) with step-up transformers and filter, which includes the AXIOM II, that provide the automation and control required for most active reservoirs.

Permanent magnet motors typically range from 93 to 95 percent efficient with a power factor greater than .98 while its counterpart, a traditionally costly induction motor (all steel, coffin bar rotors, etc.), ranges from 85 to 87 percent efficiency with less than .95 power factor. Tests of the MV VFDs PMM ESP solution repeatedly show a 10 to 20 percent direct cost savings on the operating electric bill, which can equal more than $158,000 a year in OPEX with near-unity power factor.

“With the current price of oil, we all feel the pinch on our operating budgets,” said Keith Russell, VP of Marketing, Borets. “We are pleased to introduce the Siemens SINAMICS system to our comprehensive line of permanent magnet motors for electrical submersible pumps applications downhole. Not only will this addition address the high-power applications currently being demanded by our customers, it also holds promise for future lower power speed-controlled solutions as well.”

Full power proof of concept (POC) testing in Borets’ Tulsa, Oklahoma, facility with Siemens SINAMICS Perfect Harmony drive demonstrated stable operation from start and over varying speeds, torques (constant torque and quadratic torque) and loads reflecting various well regimes of operation.

Successful installations to 26 miles of cable have already been realized with the Siemens MV VFDS and no length restrictions with the Borets PMM ESP are expected. The software and parameter settings for the PMM ESP developed by Siemens demonstrated stable high-efficient operations over a wide range of operational environments including operation at startup and breakaway.
