CAT C32 CI/D2-Certified Generator Set Addresses Oil & Gas Industry's Need For Safe, Flexible Interim Power

Offshore customers operating in potentially hazardous conditions now have access to a flexible rental solution from Caterpillar—a new hazardous location generator set certified to NEC 500 Class I Division 2 standards. Offering 994 bKW at 1800 rpm and 874 bkW at 1500 rpm, the Cat C32 Petroleum CI/D2 Hazardous Location generator set is primarily intended for customers seeking an interim power solution that addresses stringent safety requirements.

“It’s a certified solution from the factory, built to the customer’s specifications,” said Scott Roberts, oil and gas offshore marketing manager for Caterpillar. “Because these units are designed to be dealer-owned, customers can use them on an as-needed basis. Wherever in the world a customer’s rig happens to be, a Cat dealer is nearby who can provide a temporary power solution.”

The C32 Petroleum CI/D2’s key features include a wet exhaust manifold and an ATEX-compliant wiring harness that prevent sparks and ignition of flammable gas. The Electronic Control Module harnessing is protected with robust guarding and connections sheathed in flame-retardant material. All cabling is enclosed in airtight sheaths, and an optional air shut-off automatically shuts down the engine to prevent gas from entering. The generator set meets IMO II emissions requirements. “Safety is the top concern of shipyards and rig owners these days,” Roberts said. “The C32 CI/D2 is one way Caterpillar and our dealers can help address that issue.”

As a rental generator set, the C32 CI/D2 also helps customers save time and expense.

“There’s nothing they have to do other than put in fuel and water and hook it up,” Roberts said. “Our customers don’t have to spend any capital on this unit—just rent it, put it on their rig, use it till they’re done and then give it back to the dealer.”

The C32 Petroleum CI/D2 Hazardous Location generator set is available now for order through the Cat dealer network. For more information, visit www.cat.com/.
