Major Contract Renewal For Harris Pye Singapore

A major refinery's boilers and economizers in South East Asia are in safe hands, thanks to the award of a second 5-year maintenance and repair contract to Harris Pye Singapore Pte Ltd. The contract covers all the organisation's boilers in the region, but primarily the four main power boilers at their refinery at Pioneer Road, Singapore; and plants on Jurong Island, where there are some 15 other pressure boilers.

"We are on call 24/7 to ensure that all our boilers are working effectively and efficiently," explains John Kinman, Managing Director of Harris Pye Singapore, part of the global Harris Pye Group headquartered in Barry, South Wales. "Our initial contract ran from 2005-2010, during which we gained considerable experience both on working on the boilers and with the client's team. We are gratified that our hard work has paid off and that we will be working for the company for a further five years."

The Harris Pye facility in Singapore goes from strength to strength, and so too do their lists of clients and services on offer. The company's automation department's activities have in the past been dedicated to the installation of third party boiler combustion and control equipment, supported by the maintenance and servicing of instrumentation and control systems within the marine, offshore oil and gas, petrochemical and power industries.

"To meet the demands of the market we now offer the supply of steam boilers, boiler firing combustion equipment, boiler automatic control (BAC), automatic combustion control (ACC), burner management systems (BMS)," says John Kinman. "We also offer design, equipment manufacture, installation, commissioning and certification service available on a turnkey basis for the conversion of existing tank vessels into floating production storage/offloading (FPSO) systems for the offshore oil and gas industry.

"This expansion of our automation division saw senior staff transferred from the Harris Pye UK offices to our Singapore office – this in turn has led to the formation of Harris Pye Automation and new offices and workshop facilities opened in Singapore in September 2009. Like our facilities in Barry and in Dubai, the Singapore facility is ASME accredited for the use of the ‘S', ‘U' and ‘R' stamps."

Harris Pye Automation now provides a complete service providing for the supply, repair, overhaul, calibration and certification of instrumentation and control systems; and can also produce and complete well documented surveys of existing installations, equipment and systems, with recommendations in view of repair, modification or replacement to enable maximum reliability and plant efficiency. The company can also provide ‘flat pack' boiler order and erection on-site to reduce delivery time and has sold one set to SBM.

Successes include work on FPSO Jabiru Venture
"We have chalked up a considerable number of interesting achievements in the recent past. These include the successful installation of a Harris Pye ACC and BMS for the starboard main propulsion boiler on board PTTEP Australasia's FPSO Jabiru Venture," John Kinman explains.

"This project was initiated due to the vessel's proposed decommissioning from its existing station within the Jabiru oilfield in the Timor Sea, 650km west of Darwin, Australia and the potential requirement for the vessel to move under its own power (rather than being towed). The owner deemed the existing starboard main propulsion boiler controls and equipment unreliable, and replacement was their preferred choice in order to ensure and maintain future reliability of operation.

"We carried out a detailed survey on board the vessel in order to identify the specific design requirements and then submitted a proposal for approval to replace the existing control systems. Replacement ACC and BMS systems were designed and manufactured in-house, with the completion of client-witnessed factory acceptance testing (FAT), subsequent installation and full operational testing and commissioning of the system was then completed while the vessel remained in service and on station."
