OPUS technology is a proprietary Optimized Pretreatment and Unique Separation process for desalination of feed water with high concentrations of silica, organics, hardness, and boron. OPUS technology combines a proprietary high rate chemical softening process, MULTIFLO™, with filtration, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis operated at an elevated pH in single-pass or double-pass mode to generate high quality effluent suitable for discharge, recycle or reuse. On applications where the feed water has high dissolved gases and excess alkalinity, degasification is employed with the addition of an acid to reduce the solids generated in the subsequent chemical softening process as well as the alkali needed to raise the pH. The water is then treated using the MULTIFLO process, our proprietary high rate chemical softening technology. Water from the MULTIFLO process is further treated with media filtration, ion exchange softening, and cartridge filtration to further the hardness, metals, and suspended solids to lower concentrations, without pH correction. Removal of these contaminants eliminates scaling potential of the RO membranes, permitting higher recovery rates with low waste volumes. The pretreated water is pressurized through an RO system operated at an elevated pH in either single or double pass to reduce the total dissolved solids, silica, boron and organics present in the feed water.
