Usually a WAC softener is preceded by a SAC series softener to reduce the chemical load on the WAC resins. Regeneration with HCl and NaOH is both expensive and hazardous and should be limited in use. Each water is different and there are times when a SAC softener is not required and there are also times when a polishing WAC softener is needed to reduce the hardness to below 0.5 ppm for high pressure steam generators. The materials of construction are rubberlined vessels with 316SS and Hastalloy C internal materials for resistance to HCl.
Summary
Weak Acid cation resins are used for hardness removal in very high TDS waters where conventional SAC series softeners cannot meet the demands of hardness removal. These resins are regenerated with HCl and NaOH so they can operate in the Na form.
