Carbon emissions have long been the focus of global efforts to reduce the impact of industrial activities on the environment. In September 2021, the U.S. and the EU proposed that the reduction of methane emissions into our atmosphere could have a significant and fast-acting impact on the pace of global heating over the coming decades. The signing of a Global Methane Pledge at COP26 aims to cut methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

Multipoint thermometers simultaneously measure temperature in multiple locations, either horizontally or vertically, within a process. Horizontal measurements could involve reading multiple temperature points at some level across a batch reactor or process vessel. A vertical temperature profile could be composed of top to bottom measurements in a tank.

Performing a mass balance on manufacturing sites process units (or the overall plant) is critical for identifying a number of issues, including leaks, faulty sensors, meter calibration issues, process inefficiencies, and more. Unfortunately, the plants that do perform mass balances likely use a method that is difficult to maintain and does not update as new data is available for continuous monitoring.
