API Releases Bulletin Demonstrating The Suitability Of Portland Cement For CCUS Projects

The American Petroleum Institute (API) today announced the publication of API Bulletin 5100, Ordinary Portland Cement as a Barrier for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Applications. The document provides detailed information on the suitability of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) — the material used to seal and stabilize wells — for CCUS applications.

CCUS is a key technology that captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions that are either stored long-term in underground sites or used in commercial processes or product development. For sequestration, specially designed wells inject the CO2 into geologic formations for secure long-term storage. The wellbores are isolated with a durable barrier – typically OPC - which provides long-term integrity and protects other formations in the well from the CO2 in the injection zones. Permit applications for these wells (known as Class VI wells under the U.S. EPA’s Underground Injection Control program) have grown significantly with the continued advancement of the CCUS industry.

To support the safe operation of these wells, API Bulletin 5100 compiles the latest field and laboratory research on OPC, helping operators and regulators understand its safety performance and long-term reliability for CCUS applications.

“Ordinary Portland Cement has been a go-to material for many operators for CO2 injection and storage wells because of its proven performance and reliability,” API Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services Anchal Liddar said. “Comprehensively leveraging peer-reviewed research by leading experts, this bulletin demonstrates why OPC is a safe, effective and reliable option for CCUS applications.”

The publication responds to technical questions regarding OPC’s long-term performance in CCUS applications. By consolidating the latest data and expert analyses, API Bulletin 5100 supports the continued use of OPC for CCUS projects, reinforcing API’s commitment to safely advancing CCUS and environmental stewardship through established best practices.
