Energy NL Writes Provincial Party Leaders And Asks Questions On Key Energy Issues

Since the Provincial General Election of 2021, the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry has undergone a significant evolution, and substantial opportunities for success are ahead. While maintaining a strong commitment to the offshore oil and gas sector, Energy NL has also evolved to represent its members who are engaged in a broad spectrum of energy industries, including hydro, wind, and other renewables.

As part of its ongoing advocacy efforts and to ensure energy issues are thoroughly discussed during the 2025 Provincial General Election, Energy NL has written the leaders of the three provincial political parties requesting responses to key questions that reflect the opportunities and challenges facing the energy industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. The purpose of the letter is to help Energy NL members understand the positions of the parties with respect to energy development. The questions are specific, and Energy NL requests the leaders to provide direct responses which explain their positions on each topic. Leaders are asked if elected:

  • Will your government support our offshore oil and gas industry and demand the cancellation of the oil and gas sector emissions cap regulations by the Government of Canada?
  • Will your government join Energy NL in advocating for incentives that will spur economic investment, accelerate sanctioning of Bay du Nord, and encourage offshore tiebacks? What specific actions will your government take to encourage the Government of Canada to implement these incentives? Will your government consider similar provincial incentives? How will your government ensure that the local energy supply and service sector receives optimal benefits from all energy projects such as Bay du Nord, the Churchill River hydroelectric projects, wind development, and others?
  • Will your government commit to addressing concerns of project proponents for onshore wind-to-clean fuels projects and the fiscal framework in a timely fashion to ensure the projects can proceed with clarity and confidence?

“We are at a turning point in the energy industry, globally, nationally, and provincially. As the world looks to secure reliable energy sources, Newfoundland and Labrador has multiple energy products to offer, including our lower-carbon offshore oil. At this critical time, we need a provincial government that unabashedly supports all our energy resources, promotes our resources, and works to optimize our resources and the considerable benefits they provide. This includes being a strong voice for development, as well as opposing policies – such as the federal emissions cap – that restrict our production, our growth, and our prosperity. Our provincial government must stand on guard to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and Energy NL members are the primary beneficiaries of our energy developments, including the new developments on the horizon. I ask the party leaders to take this into consideration when responding to our letter, and I encourage all Energy NL members to thoroughly review the responses and ensure they support parties and candidates who support their industry.” - Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO

Energy NL has requested responses by 12:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2025, and will share them as they are received via its website and social media channels. A copy of the letter sent to party leaders is available here.
