Variations in performance during different production shifts, particularly at food processing plants, may wreak havoc on the effluent quality of a company's wastewater treatment system. Changes occur frequently on production lines. During some shifts, the equipment must undergo washing, providing an inflow of chemicals, detergents, and cleaners to the wastewater treatment system. At other times, the plant simply is idle.
