The selection of a seismic source for a particular survey has often taken little regard for the expected geology and consequently source overkill has resulted. Large source volumes are often unnecessarily employed with the resulting deep penetration but with major loss of the high frequency components and therefore resolution. Many oil producing basins around the world comprise a thick sequence of normally consolidated sediments that present no great seismic profiling problems and are ideally suited to smaller, higher frequency seismic sources.
