"Daylighting" is a non-destructive process using pressurized water (hydro) and a vacuum system (vac) to remove soil cover, thereby allowing a visual observation of buried underground facilities. Hydrovacs expose these facilities to daylight, thus the term daylighting. In the past 10 years, Hydrovacs and daylighting have gained industry acceptance in helping to minimize the challenges associated with exposing underground pipelines, utilities and other buried infrastructure.
Each Badger Hydrovac is fully self-contained and works as three units in one: a water truck, a pressure truck and a vacuum truck. Water from the Hydrovac is pressurized (up to 2000 psi) and delivered through a hand-held wand to liquefy the soil cover. The resulting slurry, composed of water and earth, is then sucked into a debris hose by a powerful vacuum system and stored in a debris tank on the truck. The pipeline or other buried infrastructure can now be identified and/or repairs completed.
