As part of its ongoing commitment to public health and operational excellence, Northumbrian Water (NWL) has selected Palintest’s Lumiso range of water testing solutions to safeguard water quality across all its treatment works. Covering an area of 9,400 km² from Teesside to Berwick upon Tweed and supplying 2.7 million residents, this move reinforces NWL’s dedication to delivering safe, high-quality water.

Following a thorough consultation with Palintest in 2023, NWL invested in 30 Lumiso Expert units, 41 Lumiso Chlorine devices, and 40 Turbidity Meters from Gateshead-based Palintest. These tools have transformed NWL’s capacity to ensure water quality consistently meets the highest UK standards for consumer safety and public health. Rigorous trials demonstrated the accuracy and repeatability of Palintest’s products, resulting in a 70% reduction in technical escalations. This milestone highlights the enhanced stability the Lumiso range brings to NWL’s treatment processes.

NWL previously encountered significant challenges with older water quality instruments, such as frequent technical escalations that caused inefficiencies, unreliable data that led to unnecessary troubleshooting of online analysers, and compliance risks associated with exceeding regulatory consent limits.

Michael James, Instrument Technician at NWL, said: “The benchtop and portable instruments are key components to verify our treatment processes, so accuracy and reliability are crucial. Our operators and technicians have observed first-hand the precision, durability, and reliability that Palintest instruments bring to the table. These instruments are second to none in terms of their performance and have given us confidence in results to verify water quality.”

Lumiso Expert enables monitoring of crucial parameters such as aluminium, alkalinity, ammonia, chlorine, iron, manganese, and phosphate throughout the treatment process. Its benchtop functionality exemplifies Palintest’s mission to simplify water testing while ensuring reliability. Complementing this, the Lumiso Chlorine offers handheld verification of chlorine levels post-disinfection, crucial for addressing the rapid decay of chlorine in water. The Turbidity Meters provide dependable manual checks to validate online instrumentation, ensuring confidence in compliance even under frequent testing intervals.

Shaurya Sheoran, Head of Product Management at Palintest, commented: “Our partnership with Northumbrian Water reflects a mutual commitment to precision and reliability. By standardising testing across all water treatment sites with the Lumiso range, NWL can ensure their treatment processes are robust and their team has confidence in the results to demonstrate compliance.”

Northumbrian Water’s operational teams have embraced Palintest’s innovative solutions, enabling rigorous offline analysis with unmatched precision. These solutions deliver highly accurate, repeatable results, provide user-friendly and portable testing capabilities, and reduce unnecessary escalation and calibration needs, improving overall operational efficiency. The Turbidity Meters also play a critical role in validating online instrumentation, with testing intervals as frequent as every 15 to 30 minutes. This dedication to accuracy ensures compliance and builds trust within the communities NWL serves.

Customer support has been a decisive factor in this partnership. Palintest’s responsive service and local support perfectly align with NWL’s mission to deliver uninterrupted exemplary service.
