PointWatch infra-red gas detector
Barking Power Station already boasted a good safety record. But high maintenance costs on existing catalytic detectors within the five gas turbine's enclosures, plus concerns by Britain's Health & Safety Executive over reliable and early fuel leakage detection across the power generation industry, led to the change.
As well as giving the previously unachieved fail-safe reliability, the PointWatch system enabled alarms to be set at lower levels, Detector Electronics Corporationh HSE advice, than traditionally possible with catalytics. The package also aided compliance with confined space regulations, reducing the need for maintenance teams to enter the acoustic enclosures.
Maintenance periods were chopped from quarterly to just twice a year. The IR detectors are not prone to poisoning, with performance not degraded by common maintenance chemicals, and they are not desensitized by exposure to background gas levels.
Supplied with a 5-year warranty, PointWatch detectors have InfinitiTM gas transmitters which link into the station's distributed control system. These transmitters simplify system integration and use, and Barking has developed a custom graphics screen in the control room for their DCS.
