Promising Production Results From New Gas Field In Mediterranean Sea

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced promising production results from the drilling and testing operations of the “Mina West-1” well as part of the gas development and production project at the West Mina field in the Mediterranean Sea.

The project is being implemented by Shell plc and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) through Rashid Petroleum Company, which is carrying out operations on behalf of Egypt's petroleum sector and its partners.

Initial tests conducted following the completion of drilling and technical preparations showed daily production rates estimated at around 45 million cubic feet of gas, in addition to nearly 1,000 barrels of condensate, reflecting the reservoir's quality and production efficiency.

The tests and reservoir performance analyses also indicated the potential to increase the well’s production rate to around 80 million cubic feet per day after connecting it to production facilities.

Drilling and preparation work for the “Mina West-2” well are scheduled to begin soon, supporting accelerated field development plans and higher production rates.

This comes within the framework of implementing the first phase of the West Mina field development plan, with investments estimated at around $390M and the application of the latest drilling and completion technologies to enhance production efficiency.

The first phase is expected to add 160 million cubic feet of gas per day, in addition to 3,000 barrels of condensate, during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Preliminary estimates indicate that recoverable reserves in the field amount to around 245 billion cubic feet of gas and approximately 5 million barrels of condensate.

The project reflects the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' continued efforts to boost domestic natural gas production.
