The Consortium Digital Microwave System, CDMS, is a fully digital point-to-point system with a 3-DS3 or 84xT1 capacity
The Consortium Digital Microwave System, CDMS, is a fully digital point-to-point system with a 3-DS3 or 84xT1 capacity. Engineered and built new from the ground up, it is compromised of a consortium of companies, which include Spirit Energy, PennzEnergy, Phillips Petroleum, and SOLA Communications, Inc., Inc. Utilizing the SONET ring format, the CDMS routes from the Lafayette, LA. central office through 30 sites on land and in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as a 1-DS3 (28xT1) spur to the Port Fourchon-Grand Isle, LA. area. The Harris Megastar 2000 6 GHz radio is the backbone of the system with digital interface through Coastcom D/I Mux III equipment. Applications supported include LAN/WAN connectivity, SCADA, MAS, video conferencing, high-speed data, and highly reliable voice/fax traffic with a variety of interface standards.

In addition to the ring protection the system also features a space diveristy antenna configuration with antennas manufactured by Comsat-RSI. The CDMS also offers 24 hour reserve battery power for land sites and a 72 hour reserve for offshore sites. All sites are equipped with GNB sealed lead-acid battery banks with a 20 year life rating. Argus switched mode rectifiers configured for redundant load sharing provide power to the battery banks. The central office facility features a Tellabs Titan 532, 96-port DACS for seamless cross-connect and interface requirements. The CDMS is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year through the Harris/Farinon StarScan system. A full-time dedicated team of veteran technicians provides system support for maintenance and repairs day or night. The CDMS is widely regarded as one of the most reliable systems in the industry.

SOLA Communications, Inc. along with its consortium partners welcomes usage of the CDMS both inland and in the Gulf of Mexico. Energy industries such as seismic, drilling, production, pipeline, marine, and construction can access the system from various locations in the CDMS 15,000 square mile coverage area. Inland based multi-location businesses such as hospitals, banks, and law enforcement agencies may utilize the system as a cost saving alternative to conventional telecom services.
