The Wiser Oil Company is an independent energy company engaged in the exploration, production and acquisition of crude oil and natural gas reserves primarily in the United States and Canada. Organized in 1905, Wiser is one of the oldest independent oil and gas companies in the United States. Wiser operates on a philosophy of moderate risk exploration, exploitation and strategic acquisitions built on a solid financial foundation.

In 1905, Clinton B. Wiser pooled some oil leases, gathered some partners and started an oil company. Five years later, he sold his shares to a small group of founders of today's Wiser Oil Company. The Company opened for business in Sistersville, West Virginia, the hub for a new industry at a time when oil was used mostly in lamps.

Early exploration and production success for Wiser came from Indian territory, now known as Oklahoma, but the focus for the Company would soon become Kentucky, where Wiser has operated for more than 70 years. Later, Michigan, Wyoming, Texas and New Mexico would be added the states where Wiser would operate.

In 1991, Wiser relocated its headquarters to Dallas, Texas, adopted a new business strategy and began a new era for the Company. Today, Wiser's primary operations are focused in Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Kentucky along with a wholly owned Canadian subsidiary, The Wiser Oil Company of Canada ("Wiser Canada"), headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Wiser Canada currently has operations in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

Wiser stock first traded on the Pittsburgh Stock Exchange, later on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange and in 1993 was listed on the New York Exchange.
