The digital oilfield is now a mature subject, with some operators having several years of experience behind them. Digital oilfield and data analytics feature widely at industry conferences and there is a wealth of published papers. In the early days there was a lot of hype and wild claims about increased value but we are now well past the days of glamour and as an industry we need to consider what are the essential elements of digital oilfield that no drilling or production operation should be without. Unfortunately we are still a long way from being able to state that digital oilfield is 'business as usual'. There are many operators that have minimal adoption of digital oilfield technology and work processes, either because they see limited value or they just do not understand where to start. One of the big problems with digital oilfield is that it spans the entire upstream functional spectrum, from exploration, well planning and well execution right through to production monitoring and product export. There are very few people who can claim to have a deep understanding of all the subject areas in the upstream business and this has resulted in a disjointed approach to digital oilfield adoption. We deal with so much data from such a wide variety of sources and interpreted by such a diverse group of experts that it is a very difficult task to achieve overall digital oilfield integration, even with more mature adopters. The more we advance along the digital oilfield 'journey' the more apparent it becomes that we still have a long way to go. This course is not going to turn you into a digital oilfield expert in one day but it is going to show you how to derive benefit from an integrated operation, where the disciplines work together effectively and share information openly. The course is part theory and part practical. It will demonstrate how to structure an effective digital oilfield programme. Your Trainer Dr Julian Pickering is the CEO of Geologix Systems Integration Ltd, a Non-Executive Director of Geologix Ltd and the Managing Director of Digital Oilfield Solutions Ltd. He is a leading industry expert on the digital oilfield, focussing primarily on drilling and production operations, and has authored many technical papers and journal articles. He has overseen the development of Real-time Operations Centres (RTOCs) and digital oilfield workflow and transition management projects in several major oil and gas companies. He is chairman of the ATCE 2014 Digital Energy Sub-committee and the former chairman of the WITSML Executive Team. He previously worked for BP for 32 years and was the head of the global digital drilling and completions programme and the head of BP’s Field of the Future facilities programme.
